#1 Tip for Prepping for Presentations

Published about 2 months ago • 3 min read

Hi Reader!

Most of you know me by now -- you know that when it comes to media, I wouldn't suggest that you do anything that I wouldn't do (or haven't done) myself.

My job is to bring you my proven tips and tell you about the best and worst situations I've encountered so that you can skip the line and learn from my real life experiences.

For example, since I started practicing for my presentations as mentioned below, whether virtual or in person, I have become so much more comfortable and confident in front of any audience. (That doesn't mean I don't still get the jitters sometimes...but that's a story for another time!)

Below you'll also find mention of a podcast I recently recorded because I have been so disappointed in hearing about how too many dietitians are unhappy with our profession. We need to talk more about this, too!

In the meantime, sending warmest regards and appreciation,

Bon

You Asked, I Answered:

Question:

You give so many presentations! What's one thing you do before you get on that stage?

Answer:

The saying is, “Practice makes perfect,” but even if “perfection” is not a possibility, practice is key to helping yourself feel comfortable in front of an audience.

Here’s one of my favorite behind-the-scenes strategies that has helped me and my media training clients over and over again:

🎤 Record your presentation as a voice memo into your phone and listen to your speech when you take walks or when you’re cooking, or whenever you can give it your attention.

This will not only help you learn your presentation, but it’ll also help you to listen in as an audience member would, to determine what might need to be modified. You may want to interject more powerful words or emphasize certain points through the inflection in your voice.

After listening over and over again – then go and present your speech in front of a mirror or record yourself on your computer screen. Especially since the pandemic, I’ve been doing more webinars than ever before, which is very different that standing on a stage. Body language, like what you do with your smile, your hands and your eyes, speaks volumes.
