Business tips I wouldn't take 🚧

Published 6 months ago • 4 min read

Hi Reader!

First and foremost....let me say that although Thanksgiving is behind us, I just want you to know that I am SO thankful for all of you for following along, for your kind words, for your questions and for getting out there with credible media messages. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 You are appreciated.

And now onto today's news digest: A few of the stories I was quoted in over these past 2 months include topics like Thanksgiving recipes, potatoes 101, benefits of chickpeas, skin health, Starbucks coffee, teas that fight inflammation, best air fryers, being a great grandparent (my fave!), and aging actively.

Why am I telling you this? It's certainly not to brag...but it is to show you that you shouldn't necessarily believe that it's essential to "niche down". I've heard so many coaches giving that advice and if I niched down...reporters wouldn't come to me to weigh in on so many different topics!

I wholeheartedly support having a specialty -- something you feel passionate about -- but if you're just starting out and that's all you focus on you might be limiting yourself and keeping yourself from opportunities that could expand your reach.

When clients come to me for one-to-one media training and business building, I always ask them about their 'specialties' and we also explore other avenues of income and interest. You never know where that leads...

I'm here if you have any questions at all.

Sending warmest regards and appreciation,

Bon

Business Tips from People Who Should Mind Their Business

I don’t know about you…but I've heard all of the following business tips below that are supposedly sage advice...but they certainly don’t work for me. When you're getting advice from someone, you need to be sure that they're talking to YOU and your particular needs. Here are a few tips that I usually take a pass on:

🗓️ Don’t work on weekends - Sometimes I don’t work DURING the week and instead l’ll go to a museum or movie or restaurant when it’s less crowded. If I choose to, When you like what you do, writing a story or answering media questions on a weekend could actually be creative and relaxing.
The day of the week doesn’t matter as much as enjoying what you do in your day.

🖥️ Leave your work at the office. My office is at home so I don’t want leave it! There are certain rooms in my home that I prefer to keep as “my office”…but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy curling up on the couch to answer emails.

⏰ Set specific work hours. The beauty of being an entrepreneur is that you’re the boss and you create your own schedule. I’m not happy when I have to work late, but if I’m practicing for an early morning TV segment, you can bet I’m going to try to learn my soundbites right before sleep instead of counting sheep!

🗣️ Don’t talk about work after work. If I had an exciting day because of my work…I want to tell everyone! (It’s usually my family that hears all the details but why should I limit work-related conversations to work hours?)

🤷🏻‍♀️ So…what DON’T you do that benefits you? Share one tip with me by hitting reply and I'll share it with our group.

You Asked, I Answered:

Question:

Have you ever filled out a time-management survey?

Answer:

When I filled one out…it was a real wake-up call! ⏰

I discovered that I actually spend most of my time doing media interviews. This reel is just a taste of a few of the past 2 months where I did 18 interviews for top tier publications including TODAY, SHAPE, EVERYDAY HEALTH and BUSINESS INSIDER. And I’ve done hundreds more (no exaggeration) throughout the year including TV, podcasts and radio segments.

But here’s what you may not know about me:

⚠️ I never had a manager.
⚠️ I never had an agent.
⚠️ I never niched myself down to specialize in just one topic.
⚠️ I rarely pitch.
⚠️ I know reporters come to me because I know exactly what they’re looking for.
💥 And of course I love when people say, “I see your name all over the place!”
