Can you point to your gut?

Published almost 2 years ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader!

Question: If I asked you to point to your gut would you know where it is?

OK. If you pointed to your stomach, guess again…

Here’s a hint: Your gut starts in your mouth and ends at your anus. Yup – it’s that long tube that connects to so many different parts of your body.

So now you know why words like, “microbiome” and “gut health” are hitting headlines everywhere. We know they must be important for us – but what do they really mean? Check out the story below for a few answers to that question.

You'll also find a personal, heart-warming story about my dad and some tips on how to not follow recipes!

As always, sending my warmest regards,

Bon

Are You A Recipe Rebel?

If the pandemic has shown us anything, it’s that you don’t need stellar cooking skills to throw a meal together.

And there’s one more thing I can add to my list: you don’t need to be the only one cooking! ASK FOR HELP! (Sorry for the caps…but it’s important and...it's also something I am
not good at!)

Getting some help in the kitchen not only gives you a break, but it also teaches life lessons to others that are more important than most things they learn in school.

I’ll admit - I wasn’t great at asking for help, but teaching my boys about the connection between delicious and nutritious happened in the supermarket 🛒 , at the kitchen counter 👩‍🍳 and at the table. Now they’re even more like recipe rebels than I am! 💥

7 Worst Foods For Gut Health

This interview I did with @Livestrong.com helps to clear up some confusion to help you figure out which foods might help and which foods could harm your gut.

Basically – when we think of “bacteria” it sounds like something we wouldn’t want to promote…but certain foods, like yogurt, fermented foods and fiber, can actually help fuel the growth of good bacteria.

And if you know me, you ‘ll know that although there are other foods that could be harmful, my final quote for this story was, “None of those foods need to be ‘avoided’ if your diet is basically well-balanced and consists of a variety of whole foods,” Taub-Dix says. “It’s how often you have them that may be more of a problem.”

Now you know the connection to the expression, “Trust your gut”. When it comes to gut health and mental health, you need to follow the physical feelings your body gives you to alert you about whether you’re making the right or wrong decisions.

What 11 Nutritionists Learned From Their Dads In The Kitchen

I loved being interviewed for this story because it helped me revisit a warm memory and a connection to my dad:

Oatmeal as Comfort Food

“My dad loved to cook … but it wasn’t any fancy meals that I remember most. He used to be up at 4 a.m., when it was dark outside, to go to work. He’d wake me up every morning to join him in having a steamy bowl of oatmeal, and then I’d go back to bed. That’s probably why even today, oatmeal is my comfort food.

As my dad showed me, I tried to show my three children that when you get together at the table, you share much more than a meal. My kitchen is the heart of my home, and that connection started long ago."
